Blog 2 MUVE Locations - Ivory Tower Library of Primitives
For my first location, I chose the Ivory Tower Library of
Primitives. The reason I chose it is because when I first went there with the class,
I was quite impressed at the amount of work that had been put into it. I feel
like it’s a great place to go if you want to learn about how to build stuff in
SL. The amount of resources you can look through is incredible, so it’s great
for both newcomers learning how to rez basic things as well as people wishing
to expand their knowledge or refresh their memory on how to make complex shapes
with primitives.
Located in Natoma, (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Natoma/210/164/28) The Ivory Tower Library of Primitives was created by Lumiere Noir who sadly passed away 2 years ago. It was first built in 2004 and got a rebuild in October 2009 and has been a fantastic place to learn ever since.
Looking at what it provides for its visitors, there is the Ivory
tower itself, a weapons range for testing out weapons, a sandbox for playing
with building and the like, and a race-track for testing out vehicles.
Looking just outside the tower itself, there are a number of complex examples out the front as shown in the above below, ranging from animated objects to complex appearing objects that show what you can do once you learn how to build well. There’s things like a flying Enterprise, a string of squares that jerk around, and a penguin.
Screenshot of the Ivory tower and some of the examples out front:
Going into the tower itself, we see various tutorials that show what menus and settings to go through, visual examples of what to do, and gives you a note-card at each station that gives a lot of details on that particular manipulation. The upper stories of the tower have many more complex examples to see.
Example of a tutorial:
Next looking at the sandbox, this is just a massive area that you can play around building stuff as shown below. There are some rules though on the side of the weapons testing area!
Rules:
Using the sandbox:
Next up is the weapons test area. It’s basically an enclosed shooting range with a big target at the end that you can use to test out weapons.
The weapons test area:
The last location is the vehicle testing area. It’s a racetrack that has invisible barriers to stop you from jumping off the edge, so it’s a great place to safely test your automotive creations.
The racetrack:
Just looking at how the actual structures of the tower and the testing locations, they seem to be built to be practical and logical, the place is not built to be aesthetically pleasing so though it is pretty cool, if you want to see aesthetic places it is better to go to places like the Realm of Light which I will look at in my next blog.
Scripting is pretty minimal, there’s mostly just scripting used for informational signs that give note-cards, and teleportation signs etc.
The impression the place gave me was that it had many hours of hard work for the benefit of the community. It has very clear tutorials that obviously had a lot of work put into them, and in general the whole place is just really well done. I believe that anybody that wants to learn how to build in SL should take the time to come here and see what the place has to offer.
